Pokemon Franchise Sales Cross 300 Million Units Worldwide
The biggest franchise in gaming, second only to Mario, is Pokemon– the series is over 20 years old now, sells million with each release, and manages to sell more hardware and merchandise than any other IP in the video game industry. And now, with the release of Pokemon UltraSun/UltraMoon, it has crossed another major milestone- it has now sold over 300 million units worldwide cumulatively, across all its games.
This is, so far, a milestone that only the Mario franchise has crossed- and that’s with Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party, and all the other Mario franchises put together. Put simply, Pokemon‘s accomplishment is staggering, especially since Nintendo does not count mobile downloads as part of the series’ sales (which other publishers do for their IP).
Right now, Pokemon has sold more than Grand Theft Auto, Call of Duty, Assassin’s Creed, The Elder Scrolls, and any other franchise you can name except for Mario. At this rate, it might be enough to sustain the Switch all by itself when it debuts on the console, tentatively scheduled for next year some time.
